Urban- I remember there was a HUGE K-Martin Astor Place back in my days in NYC. Im sure it's become either Target or Wal-Mart since the big K took a big dive in popularity. I will not question the Divas wisdom in people knowing what they are getting into. It is public knowledge. It's too bad still sign on in spite of it.

Funny how big Wal-Mart is for most people. Here in the city we don't have one. I'm not sure if there is one in Brooklyn. I know I'm all over Target though. They are around what is considered "the outer boroughs."

I won't shop in Wal-Mart if I can help it.

Diva is right. Wal-Mart's employee policies aren't secret. People know what they are signing up for. I know the economy is hard, certain areas of the country offer no other employment but these are the choices we make.

Welcome Fitness Diva! YES, who cares about what they do just as long as there is a good sale. Have you ever been in K-Mart when they have a blue light special. I have never seen old women move so fast. It's like a football game, They tackle, juke, spin out and dive! All to get to that blue light. I think it should be an event at the Olympics. Flash a blue light at one end of the track and see old women throw down their canes and walkers and start moving like Flo Jo. Also, I do think every mother loves Wal-Mart. I'm not sure why but I see many of them there full of joy.

It's pretty difficult to compete with Wal-Mart or any big retail store. I try to go to a neighborhood hardware store (it's owned by a guy I know from gradeschool!) but sometimes the big stores is one-stop shopping! I dislike shopping and really don't want to go to 3 stores or something. Plus, the prices are usually cheaper at WalMart and I can see why families go there.

I don't have a Wal-Mart near me but even if I did I'd probably go to Target instead. Target seems more "fun" or something and the personnel there are young and helpful and seem pretty happy.

Not that I have anything against older help, it's just that at this particular Target, all the personnel seem to be in their early 20s!

Go to Spokane, Washington the Mom, and Pop stores are thriving! Wal-Mart, and every other chain is there as well. The difference is that being in a farming community the Mom and Pop stores can sell at half the price of the chains..Go there and see.

A BB traveling at 400fps is fast enough to penetrate many things including skulls. They do bounce off your Kettle pots, and go some where? Don't they? You did say copper, Right? A ricochet is a very, very dangerous thing.

On the note of combat zones: When soldiers have their "BOOTS ON THE GROUND; THEY ARE TOLD TO COCK AND LOCK" This means in a combat zone rack a round in the chamber, and have your safety on!! As evil as Wal-Mart is, they do have cheaper prices. I've heard about their lack of benefits but I haven't done any research on them myself. From a marketing standpoint, the rumors alone give me pause.

Luckily, I don't have to buy anything in bulk. Hmm. Actually, maybe I'd be lucky if I had to buy in bulk cuz mebbe that would mean there was a Mr. Q? Not sure as I don't want any um, BabyQs.

ANYway, I shop at Target and until recently, rarely went there or shopped much except online. Under duress.

I can see the allure of the BB gun. And a slingshot. Actually, a slingshot sounds really cool! I think there is something called a "Wrist Rocket" - a slingshot thing that attaches to your wrist for stability.

I'm not into violence but trying to hit any kinda target is fun. I like darts, I took archery in college (sucked at it beacause I didn't have the "pull") and I liked the "target" shooting at the amusement parks.

I've also shot firearms and bruised my upper arm nicely attempting to shoot clay pigeons with a shotgun that was too long for me.

In states where hunting is the norm (and a good way to control overpopulation), the people respect guns and have many rules to prevent accidents. While I can't see shooting a deer, the hunters I have spoken to actually have a great respect for the animal and do not want it to suffer. Plus, it's actually quite difficult to track and shoot deer and elk and suchlike.

Sounds like you outgrew the BB gun!

wal-mart reminds me of all the other marts that have gone before.

zellers, krezges, k-mart,etc.....big box, overly bright, anticeptic sterile environments that evolved out of a necessity to deliver cheap products on a large enough scale to satisfy the modern urban/suburban communities.

the by-product of this behaviour is that it kills a smaller scale retail shop that met the needs of a smaller scale community.

some see this as a viscious attack, and in some ways this is true...but the fact remains that the communities needs were not being well met by the smaller shops....and so the big ones emerged.

i will get called a fascist by some for this view, but that is a political view, my comments are sociological and economic.

in soc. and econ. models the most efficient delivery mechanism for meeting the needs of growing communities is the big box retail.....otherwise they wouldn`t make money.

this is the way monitary pressure works.

if there is a problem at all,it lies in the problem we have in housing, feeding and entertaining growing communities of middle-income families.

it would be ineffiecient at best to have smaller stores to meet the needs of the community, unless we stop buying new cars all the time, in which case moving the retail closer to the consumer or having better public transport would be a solution.

the closest wal-mart to me is roughly 5 miles away and so i tend to shop more locally, being a cyclist.....and so i`m very rarely inside the place.

the few times i have visited i have been struck by the sheer scope of the place and the loss of a sense of humanity, but then again, that`s the barren-ness of suburbia exemplied......the car-created wasteland.

could be worse though....a gun-toting frontier town environment full of factionalised malcontents vying for dominance over nothing.......the artifact of spanish imperialism.

i`ll take the english version for a thousand alex.

Your right about Wal mart. Here in Guatemala, and all of America Central They go by different names. Go figure. I know in the Northwest they would cater beyond belief. They would have complete sections I've never seen. These would include bolts of fabric, sewing machines, and the such.
In the outdoor area they'd actually sell live worms, and bullet reloading components. I found that strange because I do reload, or did. The way in which they stored there powder, primers, and the such was extremely unsafe!

On a seperate note:

dr. alistair your a fraud! I don't censor my blog so you are more than welcome to ramble in there. Between what you left here the other day, and on my site; with the amount of holes in your sail I'll bet your boat isn't going anywhere. I didn't know which site you use. I am still tired, and not quite done disecting your "spew", but I know that when I have more time it will be very fun. Walmart blows chunks to coin your phrase (love it). My husband will go there to find their discounts; I cannot bear the place, but I do admit to buying diapers there because they were cheap--only for my son would I enter that cesspool of americana.

To All - Yes I will concede that I have saved considerable amounts of money shopping at this store. The high fuel prices and rising costs across the board have forced me to depend on it more so that I have in the past. That being said, there is still much to do when it comes to cleaning up their act.

Maritza - Companies will do anything to get their product in this store because if you make it there, you will make it anywhere. I see loads of blue collar types working the aisles. With the factories closed, WM is the new American sweat shop. Not only do they screw workers over here but they perpetuate the need for sweat shops globally.

JohnB - None of that shocks me with WM. They could have the footage of an employee getting killed on camera from a falling shelf and still try and get out of it. This is the kind of stuff that really gets me.

As for the BB Gun, I will admit that I would shoot a rat with one ONLY if I found one in my apartment. The reason being is because it has violated my personal space and I must protect my property.

Marsha - I too had cap guns and while they were fun, there is not substitute for a toy gun that shoots projectiles.

Jill - I missed out on this joy that you had with your neighbours BB gun. I just want a slice of that, just a morsel.

Leah - I do have the right to bare arms. that is true and something to keep in mind. I totally understand why you took a trip to WAL*Mart. My grocery bill has gone up by about 10 to 15 bucks each time out. That starts to heart even more when you factor in the fact that you have kids to feed. I cringe and what you must pay.

I'm with Leah, Wal-Mart saved me a buncha' money on groceries. Regardless of ethics or whatever- people can protest and boycott, but the truth is, people want convenience and things that cost low. The small guy is too expensive and the "buy in bulk" theory has risen an all time high , ie: Sam's Club and BJ's, places like that.

I remember my hillbilly neighbor would shoot beer cans off a block of wood with his bb gun. He let me try it and it was the weekend festivities. Oh the fun I had as a child. *crosses eyes*
