Well boys and girls it wasn't all that long ago that I voiced my disgust at Fox demanding the the latest installment in the Die Hard series be cut down to a tame and lame PG-13 rating, which simply made my stomach turn. I gave you the readers the chance to decide if I go see it or not and most of you said NO! What with the first 3 being R rated and all, how could it match the action, blood and gore of it's predecessors?
I steered clear of the neutered film per your wishes but eventually got pressured into seeing it by on old friend who knew how much I love this series of films. It was at the super cheap theater at this point and out of the big multiplexes and let me tell you all right now.....you voted correctly.
While the film was OK you could clearly see where they digitally edited out the blood from gunshot wounds and the like. There were little black holes or puffs of smoke and if there was any blood it was tiny black drops. So the people in world of Live Free or Die Hard had tar running through their veins. Even worse, I could clearly see where they dubbed over the swearing several times. The topper (and what almost made me choke on my own vomit) was John McClane's trademark line getting muffled out by a gunshot. It was like watching a movie that was edited for Network TV or even worse, a local TV station that runs infomercials for windows or siding for your house during the commercial break and nothing else.
I HATED IT but I could see a great film trough all the editing to make it child friendly. If only this film was allowed to be what it should have been, what it was supposed to be, what it wanted to be. It was right there, so near yet so far.
At last it brings me many pleasures to discover that the REAL "unrated" version of the film is out on DVD. This, my friends, is a Godsend !
I was hoping to have a review for you here on the blog but...cough cough......I haven't been able to get a copy because I've been so sick.
So, until then, lets see what the lovely Sandee Westgate has to say courtesy of one of my new favorite sites, Tunaflix.com!
